Many fans of the Iconic and veteran songwriter, singer and actress, Onyeka Onwenu MFR, spread across the globe were devastated when news filtered in late Tuesday night that she had died.

The multi-talented golden voice Onwenu was born in 1952. She died at 72. Her last outing was the birthday party of an old friend, Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, which held in Lagos Tuesday night, where she was invited to perform.

Sources say “she had actually performed at the party and returned to her seat where she suddenly slumped and was immediately rushed to Reddington Hospital, Victoria Island, where she subsequently passed on.”

It was gathered that prior to attending the party, she did not show any form of weak feeling or sickness, as she was full of life as ever, a development that contributed to the shocking waves generated by her sudden demise.

The music maestro affectionately known as the ‘Elegant Stallion had a fulfilling career that spanned over four decades, as she was also a renowned Journalist and politician.

Onyeka Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s and released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She has since released numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.”

She also acted in several Nollywood films and has won numerous awards for her contributions to music and the film industry. She has been recognised as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music.

In addition to her entertainment career, Onwenu has also been involved in politics. She was appointed as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and later became the Director-General, National Centre for Women Development in 2016.

Onwenu has been recognised for her contributions to Nigerian society, including being awarded the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic MFR in 2011. She has also been recognised as one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organisations.
