NCC, NEMA deepen synergy to boost emergency communication, disaster response

In what experts and stakeholders have described as a strategic move to enhance public safety and disaster management services across the country, the Nigerian Communications Commission NCC and the National Emergency Management Agency NEMA have pledged to deepen their existing synergy in order boost emergency communication infrastructure and response systems.
This renewed commitment came on the heels of a recent courtesy visit by the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar to the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking at the high-level engagement, Mrs. Umar underscored the indispensable role of effective communication in disaster risk reduction and emergency response. She called for expanded cooperation between the two agencies, particularly in the areas of enhancing emergency communication networks, promoting risk awareness, and establishing robust early warning systems to protect lives and property.
Mrs. Umar, who also lauding NCC’s efforts in operationalising the national emergency number, advocated a seamless integration of the NCC’s platform with NEMA’s emergency contact services. According to her, such interoperability is vital to ensuring that Nigerians in distress can access timely and coordinated emergency assistance.
In response, Dr. Maida reaffirmed the NCC’s dedication to supporting NEMA’s mandate through technology-driven solutions. He stressed the need to increase public awareness on the appropriate use of emergency numbers, which, he noted, would empower citizens to act promptly and effectively in critical situations. Both leaders underscored the urgency of leveraging digital technology and institutional collaboration to enhance Nigeria’s disaster preparedness and response capabilities. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing joint initiatives that prioritize public safety and national resilience.
