Transport Minister orders probe of BRT-train accident…As NSIB begins investigation

Minister of Transport, Mu’azu Sambo has ordered a detailed probe of the circumstances behind yesterday’s collision involving a BRT staff bus conveying members of staff of Lagos State Government to the office and a train operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation NRC in which lives were lost and scores injured.
The Minister also expressed deep concern over the accident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday at the Shogunle, Ikeja area of Lagos.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau NSIB has commenced investigation into the accident involving the train with registration number 2215 and a Lagos State BRT staff bus with registration number 04A-48LA.
In a statement by the Director, Press and PR of the ministry, Henshaw Ogubike, the Minister also commiserates with the families of the victims and particularly the government and the people of Lagos State over this incident and has expressed deepest concern and condolences. He also prayed for eternal repose for those who lost their lives and that the Almighty God grant them eternal rest while also praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
The statement reads in part: “Sambo also expressed his sincere appreciation for the cooperation gotten from the Lagos State Government, National Emergency Management Agency NEMA and concerned Lagosians who swung into action after the ill-fated incident to ensure that the site was cleared and the injured got treatment expediently.
“Meanwhile, the Minister of Transport has ordered a detailed investigation of the incident and the Nigerian Railway Police Command has effectively taken over the investigation of the incident that has led to the unnecessary loss of lives this morning in Lagos.”
It was further gathered that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau NSIB has commenced investigation into an accident involving a train with registration number 2215 and a Lagos State BRT staff bus with registration number 04A-48LA.
The accident occurred on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at PWD, Shogunle on Agege Motor Road, Ikeja, Lagos State.
According to a statement issued by General Manager, Public Affairs, NSIB, Tunji Oketunbi: “This accident investigation marks the first train accident investigation embarked upon by the Bureau since its establishment under the NSIB Act 2022”.
“The NSIB hereby solicits information from the general public in form of pictures, video or recording evidence to help assist in conducting a comprehensive investigation. “The NSIB is a multimodal investigation agency charged with the mandate to investigate transport accidents and serious incidents in Nigeria with the aim of identifying the probable causes and proffer safety recommendations that can prevent reoccurrence”.
Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has visited injured victims of the crash at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital LASUTH in Ikeja.
Already, six persons have been confirmed dead by emergency responders, and over 82 persons injured and rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital LASUTH The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced investigation into an accident involving a train with registration number 2215 and a Lagos State BRT staff bus with registration number 04A-48LA.
