Five abducted maritime workers, others released
The five members of the Maritime Workers of Nigeria MWUN, who were among the eight other Nigerians kidnaped by gunmen in Rivers State waters on Monday have been released, according to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency NIMASA.
A statement signed by the Assistant Director, Public Relations unit of the agency, Osagie Edward, said the release of the abducted travelers, which occurred on Saturday evening was sequel to the intervention of the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Bashir Jamoh and other stakeholders.
The statement said that the DG broke the news after a phone conversation with the President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigerian MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju at about 8:15pm on Saturday.
It was also gathered that the abductees are believed to be in good physical condition and that Comrade Adeyanju is expected to provide detailed report on the incidents surrounding the abduction in the course of the week.
The statement reads in part: “The eight persons were travelling to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital from Kula area in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state before the gunmen abducted them at the Kula-Abonnema waterway. More information will be made available to the public in due course”.
