The Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council NSC, Dr. Akutah Pius Ukeyima, has been conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. Degree in International Criminal Cooperation at Nasarawa State University, Keffi. The academic milestone, which signposts his commitment to knowledge-driven leadership, marks a significant achievement for the maritime administrator.
Meanwhile, Dr. Akutah has dismissed rumours that his political ambition was interfering with his job at the Council, insisting that he remains focused and committed to his mandate as the CEO of the NSC, being Nigeria Economic Regulator of the port industry.
The conferment event was part of the university’s 8th combined convocation ceremony, which also commemorated the institution’s 25th anniversary. It was graced by dignitaries from within and outside the country.
Speaking on what the convocation meant to him, Dr. Akutah explained that the ceremony marked the culmination of a journey that began seven years ago. Although he had completed his degree requirements in 2024, he had to wait for the convocation day.
He added that his pursuit of a PhD was inspired by his desire to teach and impart meaningful knowledge. “As a teacher of International Criminal Law, I have trained lawyers, prosecutors, and judges in different jurisdictions around the world. Pursuing a PhD is just a way forward for me towards the journey of what I love,” he said.
Akutah further emphasised the necessity of continuous education. “It is very important for everyone because as long as you don’t stop living, you have to continue learning. So, for someone who wants to prepare himself for tomorrow’s leadership, you have to continue to educate yourself,” he added.
He assured that the adds this academic laurel to his administrative portfolio would bring to bear on his job. He also challenged other public office holders and professionals alike to the need to realise that leadership is most effective when continually refined by learning, and that the pursuit of knowledge remains a lifelong exercise.
In another development, the NSC-boss has assured that there is no iota of truth in the speculation that his political activities would interfere with his duties at the Council, noting that both exercises are different and distinct, insisting that he is ever focused on his core responsibilities as the CEO of the Council.
Akutah, who made the clarification at a recent public event in Lagos, described the speculations as unfounded and misrepresentation of his priorities, stressing that his focus remains firmly on the discharge of his statutory responsibilities under the Nigerian Shippers council.
“While public officials are often subject to speculation regarding political intentions, such narratives should not be allowed to overshadow institutional work or be used to undermine regulatory actions taken in good faith and in line with the law.
“All decisions taken under MY leadership have been guided strictly by legal provisions, stakeholder consultations, and the broader objective of maintaining balance within the maritime economy, rather than any personal or political considerations. The Council’s priority remains the protection of national trade interests, fair regulation of the port economy, and ensuring stability across the shipping and logistics value chain.
“We should also know that distractions arising from political rumours or external commentary do not alter the Council’s regulatory direction, adding that his administration continues to engage stakeholders and implement reforms aimed at strengthening efficiency and transparency in the sector”, he said.
According to him, the leadership of a critical regulatory agency requires focus, continuity, and adherence to due process, reiterating that his attention remains on institutional reforms rather than political pursuits.
He said: “I urge the stakeholders and the public to evaluate my performance based on policy outcomes and sector stability rather than speculation about personal ambitions, and so the Council will continue to operate within its mandate regardless of external narratives.
“I wish to reaffirm my commitment to Nigeria’s maritime sector, and my priority remains ensuring that regulatory interventions support economic growth, protect stakeholders’ interests, and enhance Nigeria’s position in regional and global trade.”
