The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, early hours of Wednesday, declared incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and candidate of the All Progressives Congress APC winner of the 2019 presidential election, held on Saturday February 23.

Meanwhile, in what appeared his first post-victory speech, the President-elect has charged his party members and supporters not to over celebrate his victory at the polls, saying there is so much work to be done.

According to figures announced by the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Buhari was declared re-elected having polled 15,191,847 votes, winning in 19 states, to defeat his closest rival, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, who scored 11, 255,978 votes and won 17 states and the FCT, and the other 71 candidates.

The INEC chairman, who doubles as the Chief Retuning Officer, while announcing the results at the national collation centre on Wednesday morning, said that Buhari was declared winner, having met the constitutional requirements.

The chairman also disclosed that the registered voters was 82,344, 107, accredited voters was 29,364,209, total votes cast was 28,614,190, total valid votes was 27,324,583 and rejected votes was 1,289,607. “That Muhammadu Buhari having satisfied the requirement of the law and scored the highest votes is hereby declared the winner,” Yakubu said.

He also said that Felix Nicholas of the Peoples Collation Party PCP scored 110,196 votes, while Ositelu Isaac Babatunde of Accord Party AP polled 19,209 votes.

It would be recalled that Buhari In 2015, scored 15, 424,921 votes to beat the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP, who pooled 12,853,162 votes. The total number of registered voters in the country for the 2019 election is 84,004,084, with 44,405,439 (52.86 per cent) as male, and 39,598,645 (47.14 per cent) as female, while the number of collected Permanent Voter Cards PVCs nationwide was 72,775,502.

Muhammadu Buhari had commenced his winning journey when he won 219,231 votes in the southwestern state of Ekiti, while his main opponent, Atiku Abubakar, got 154,032, as announced by the electoral commission. He also defeated Atiku in Katsina, sweeping all the 34 LGAs

The 2019 presidential election was held at 119,973 polling units in 36 States of the federation and the FCT.
