The Managing Director/CEO, of the Nigerian Ports Authority NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has proposed the strengthening of maritime governance across the West and Central African region as part of measures to boost efficiency and competitiveness of the seaports in the region.

Dr. Dantsoho spoke at the just concluded Abuja MoU Regional Workshop for Directors-General, Chief Executive Officers of Heads of Port State Control and the launch of the Abuja MoU.

The event themed: “Future –Ready Port State Control Regime: Leadership, People, Governance and Performance for Safer Maritime Systems”, was organised by the Abuja Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control (Abuja MoU) with support from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

The MD, who acknowledged the contributions of the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, described the programme as a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional capacity, enhanced maritime governance, and support the effective implementation of Port State Control throughout the Abuja MoU region.

He commended the Chairman of Abuja MoU, His Excellency Hon. Ebrima Sillah, Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure of the Republic of The Gambia; the Vice-Chairman, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy; His Excellency Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola CON, and the Secretariat led by Captain Sunday Umoren, for their leadership of the Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control for the West and Central African Region (Abuja MoU).
