The Nigeria Customs Service has commenced the implementation of 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures and Tariff Amendments as approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to a statement by the National Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada.

The Service said the amendments are aimed at strengthening the country’s fiscal and trade policy framework, promote economic competitiveness, boost revenue generation, and align Nigeria’s tariff regime with the Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS, and international obligations.

The approved changes include:

1. Revised Import Adjustment Tax (IAT) List and Revised National List for ECOWAS Common External Tariff (2022–2027)

2. Revised Import Prohibition List (Trade)

3. Revised List of Goods Liable to Excise Duty

4. Green Tax Surcharge on motor vehicles with engine capacities of 2000cc and above

5. Revised Export Prohibition List

Consequently, the Service directed importers, exporters, manufacturers, licensed customs agents and other stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the amended tariff schedules and ensure full compliance.

The statement further disclosed that the complete 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures and Tariff Amendments document has been uploaded on the Service’s website in line with efforts to ensure transparency:

The statement reads in part: “The Service Reaffirms commitment to supporting government policies while fulfilling its mandate of trade facilitation, revenue collection, and border security. Successful implementation requires cooperation from all stakeholders in the trade ecosystem.”
